FAQ

Can it check old or future dates?

Yes — dates from years 1 to 9999 are supported. For very old historical dates, the result uses today’s Gregorian calendar rules all the way back, while local calendars at the time may have differed.

What counts as a weekend?

Saturday and Sunday are marked as weekend days. Public holidays are not included here; use the Business Days Calculator when you need custom working days and holidays.

Why show the ISO week too?

Many planners and spreadsheets group dates by ISO week, where weeks run Monday to Sunday and belong to the year containing their Thursday. Showing it next to the weekday makes scheduling easier.

Calendar Details and Date Calculations

The Weekday Calculator provides instant calendar details for any selected date. When you input a date, the tool calculates its weekday, ISO week number, day of the year, and whether the year is a leap year or a common year. It also identifies if the date falls on a weekend and counts how many days remain in that year.

The tool pre-fills the date input field with today's date. As soon as you select a different date, the results update instantly. If you clear the date input, the weekday result displays "—" and the status returns to the hint: "Pick a date — the weekday and calendar details update instantly.". If you enter an invalid date, the tool displays the error message: "That is not a valid calendar date.".

All calculations are performed directly in your browser. No data you enter is uploaded to BroBroGo.

Supported Date Ranges and Calendar Systems

The calculator supports dates from year 1 to year 9999. For historical dates, the tool applies modern Gregorian calendar rules retroactively across the entire supported range.

Because the Gregorian calendar was not adopted globally at the same time, local calendars used in historical eras may differ from the results shown here. When analyzing historical events, the calculated weekday reflects what the date would be if the Gregorian calendar had been in continuous use since year 1.

Weekdays, Weekends, and ISO Weeks

The tool categorizes each date into a "Day type" to assist with scheduling and planning.

  • Weekday vs. Weekend: Saturday and Sunday are classified as "Weekend". Monday through Friday are classified as "Weekday". Public holidays are not factored into this check.
  • ISO Week Dates: The tool calculates the ISO week number according to the ISO 8601 standard. Under this standard, weeks run from Monday to Sunday. An ISO week is assigned to the calendar year that contains its Thursday. This means early January dates can sometimes belong to the final ISO week of the previous year, or late December dates can belong to the first ISO week of the next year.

Leap Years and Year Types

The calculator determines whether a selected date falls within a "Leap year" or a "Common year".

A common year contains 365 days, while a leap year contains 366 days to account for the solar cycle. Under Gregorian rules, a leap year occurs every four years, except for end-of-century years, which must be divisible by 400 to be leap years. This extra day is added to February as February 29.

For example, if you select the leap day 2024-02-29, the tool returns the following outputs:

  • Weekday: Thursday
  • ISO week: 2024-W09
  • Day of year: 60 / 366
  • Year type: Leap year

Day of Year and Days Remaining

The tool tracks the sequential progress of a date within its calendar year:

  • Day of year: This output shows the sequential number of the day (from 1 to 365, or 366 in a leap year).
  • Days left in year: This output calculates the exact number of days remaining from the selected date until December 31.

These metrics are useful for project tracking, financial calculations, and tracking progress toward annual milestones.
