Structural Validation and Geolocation Mapping of Global Phone Numbers
The Global Phone Formatter & Geolocation Checker is a free online tool designed to format phone numbers, verify if they match published numbering-plan rules, and identify their public allocation areas. By checking the length, prefix, and type of a phone number against official numbering patterns, the tool determines if a number is structurally valid. It operates in two distinct modes: a single-number mode and a batch-file mode.
In addition to structural validation, the tool extracts geographic labels associated with the prefix of the phone number. However, it is important to note that this process does not verify if a number is currently active, assigned to a real person, or capable of receiving calls.
Input Parameters and File Requirements
To process phone numbers, the tool requires specific inputs depending on the selected mode.
Single Number Inputs
- Country or region (
Country or region): A dropdown selection used to supply the calling-code context for phone numbers written in domestic formats. - Phone number (
Phone number): A single phone number containing digits, common punctuation, and an optional extension.
Batch Mode Inputs
For processing multiple numbers simultaneously, users can upload a plain text file using the interface option Drop a TXT file here or choose one (Drop a TXT file here or choose one). The uploaded file must meet the following technical specifications:
- Must be saved in UTF-8 encoding.
- Must use the
.txtfile extension. - Must contain exactly one phone number per line.
- Must contain at least one phone number and must not exceed the maximum allowed file size or line limit.
Output Reports and Data Fields
The tool generates detailed reports based on the selected processing mode.
Single Number Mode
When a single number is checked, the tool displays a Numbering-plan report (Numbering-plan report) containing the following fields and labels:
- Status Message: Displays "The number matches a published numbering pattern." (
The number matches a published numbering pattern.) if the number is valid. - Length (
Length): Displays the digit count as "‹count›digits" (‹count› digits) alongside a diagnostic status of "Pass" (Pass) or "Needs attention" (Needs attention). - Numbering pattern (
Numbering pattern): Displays a diagnostic status of "Pass" (Pass), "Needs attention" (Needs attention), or "Not checked" (Not checked). - Country calling code (
Country calling code): The detected international calling code. - National number (
National number): The national-format representation of the number. - Number type (
Number type): Displays one of the following classified types:- "Fixed line" (
Fixed line) - "Mobile" (
Mobile) - "Fixed line or mobile" (
Fixed line or mobile) - "Toll-free" (
Toll-free) - "Premium-rate" (
Premium-rate) - "VoIP" (
VoIP) - "Special service" (
Special service) - "Not determined" (
Not determined)
- "Fixed line" (
- Public prefix area (
Public prefix area): Displays the geographic label mapped to the prefix, "Global or non-geographic service" (Global or non-geographic service), "No narrower public area is mapped for this prefix." (No narrower public area is mapped for this prefix.), or "The public area table could not be loaded. Formatting and plan checks are still complete." (The public area table could not be loaded. Formatting and plan checks are still complete.). - Formats: Displays the formatted variations of the number, including "International" (
International) and "National" (National). - Context Notification: If the entered number contains an international prefix that overrides the manual dropdown selection, the tool displays: "The + calling code identifies
‹detected›; the selected country was not used." (The + calling code identifies ‹detected›; the selected country was not used.).
Batch Mode
When processing a batch file, the tool displays a Results preview (Results preview) showing "‹shown› of ‹total› rows" (Showing ‹shown› of ‹total› rows. The CSV includes every row.) with a table containing these columns:
- "Line" (
Line) - "Original" (
Original) - "Status" (
Status) - "Result" (
Result) - "Country / region" (
Country / region) - "Public prefix area" (
Public prefix area)
It also displays a summary section with:
- "Numbers" (
Numbers) - "Plan matches" (
Plan matches) - "Need attention" (
Need attention)
Validation Rules, Constraints, and Error Handling
The tool applies strict validation rules to ensure numbers conform to official numbering plans.
International Calling Code Priority
If a phone number begins with an international "+" calling code, it carries its own context. This code takes priority, and the manually selected country or region is ignored. The selected country or region is only used to supply the calling-code context when the entered number does not begin with a "+".
Validation Rules and Error Messages
- Under-length numbers: If a number is shorter than allowed by the selected numbering plan, it triggers: "This number is shorter than the selected numbering plan allows." (
This number is shorter than the selected numbering plan allows.). - Over-length numbers: If a number is longer than allowed, it triggers: "This number is longer than the selected numbering plan allows." (
This number is longer than the selected numbering plan allows.). - Invalid length: If the length is invalid for the plan, it triggers: "This number length is not used by the selected numbering plan." (
This number length is not used by the selected numbering plan.). - Unrecognized prefix: If the length is correct but the prefix is unrecognized, it triggers: "The length fits, but the prefix does not match a published numbering pattern." (
The length fits, but the prefix does not match a published numbering pattern.).
Input Constraints and Error Messages
- Character limit: Exceeding the character limit triggers: "Keep the phone number at or below
‹max›characters." (Keep the phone number at or below ‹max› characters.). - Invalid characters: "Remove line breaks, bidirectional marks or invisible control characters." (
Remove line breaks, bidirectional marks or invisible control characters.). - Non-numeric input: "Enter one phone number using digits, common punctuation and an optional extension." (
Enter one phone number using digits, common punctuation and an optional extension.). - Unrecognized calling code: "The international calling code is not recognized." (
The international calling code is not recognized.).
Batch File Validation Rules
- Non-TXT files: "Choose a .txt file." (
Choose a .txt file.). - File size limit exceeded: "Keep the TXT file at or below
‹max›." (Keep the TXT file at or below ‹max›.). - Encoding issues: "Save the TXT file as UTF-8 and try again." (
Save the TXT file as UTF-8 and try again.). - Empty file: "Add at least one phone number to the TXT file." (
Add at least one phone number to the TXT file.). - Line limit exceeded: "Keep the list to
‹max›non-empty lines or fewer." (Keep the list to ‹max› non-empty lines or fewer.). - General processing failure: "This file could not be checked. Try a fresh TXT export." (
This file could not be checked. Try a fresh TXT export.).
Scope Limitations and Privacy
Results describe numbering-plan metadata, not a person, device or active line. No owner, current carrier, live location, reachability or spam record is checked. Geographic labels may differ from a caller's actual location due to number portability, mobile usage, VoIP, or reassignment.
Your phone number is checked in your browser and is not uploaded to BroBroGo.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a numbering-plan match mean the number is real?
No. A match means the length and prefix fit a published numbering pattern. It cannot confirm that the number was assigned, has an active SIM, can receive calls, or belongs to anyone.
What does the public prefix area mean?
It is the geographic label published for that number prefix. Number portability, mobile use, VoIP, and reassignment mean it may differ from the caller’s home or current location.
Why do I need to choose a country or region?
The selection supplies the calling-code context for a number written in domestic format. A number beginning with + carries its own international calling code, so that code takes priority.
