FAQ

Why can the same notes have more than one chord name?

A pitch set can support several harmonic readings. E–G♯–B–C♯, for example, can be heard as E6 or C♯m7/E. The surrounding key, melody and chord progression determine which name communicates the musical role best.

How does the finder decide the inversion?

In Notes mode, the first distinct note is treated as the bass. In Guitar mode, the lowest sounding unmuted string is the bass, even when it is not the physically lowest string.

Which guitar tuning and fret range are supported?

Guitar mode uses standard E–A–D–G–B–E tuning. Each string can be muted, open or fretted from 1 to 24. Capos and alternate tunings are not applied.

Chord Construction and Pitch Set Identification

Identifying chords requires translating a collection of individual pitches into a structured harmonic symbol. Chord Finder analyzes these pitch sets to determine how the intervals relate to a designated root note. By evaluating the specific distances between notes, the tool calculates the interval formulas and matches them against established chord structures.

The tool offers two distinct input methods under the Input method toggle: Notes mode and Guitar mode. In Notes mode, users enter note names from A to G, with optional sharps or flats, into the Notes from bass upward field. The input accepts notes separated by spaces or commas, such as "E G C" or "F# A C E". Octave numbers are optional. To speed up entry, users can also click the quick-select buttons under Add a pitch.

To ensure accurate harmonic analysis, the tool enforces specific input limits:

  • A minimum of two different notes is required to identify a chord. If fewer are provided, the tool displays "Enter at least two different notes." or "Add another different note to identify a chord.".
  • A maximum of 12 note entries can be processed at one time. Exceeding this limit triggers the error message: "Use no more than 12 note entries at a time.".
  • If an invalid character or note format is entered, the tool displays: ‹token›” is not a note name. Use A–G with an optional sharp, flat or octave number..
  • If the entered pitch set does not match any known chord structures, the interface displays: "No exact chord name matches this pitch set. Check the notes or try a different bass order.".

The Role of the Bass Note and Chord Inversions

The lowest sounding pitch of a chord, known as the bass note, dictates its overall harmonic feel and determines its inversion. The bass note is not always the root of the chord. When the root is not in the bass, the chord is considered inverted.

Chord Finder determines the bass note and the resulting position based on the chosen input method:

Once the bass note and root are identified, the tool calculates the chord's Position. The output will display one of the following structural positions:

  • Root position: The root of the chord is the lowest sounding note.
  • First inversion: The third of the chord is in the bass.
  • Second inversion: The fifth of the chord is in the bass.
  • Third inversion: The seventh of the chord is in the bass.
  • Inversion ‹number›: Higher-order inversions where upper extensions serve as the bass note.

Guitar Fretboard Translation and Standard Tuning

In Guitar mode, the tool translates physical fretboard fingerings into musical notes, intervals, and chord names. This mode is calibrated strictly to a six-string guitar in standard E–A–D–G–B–E tuning, running from the Low E string to the High E string. The tool does not apply capos or alternate tunings.

For each of the six strings, users can select the following fret configurations:

  • Muted (represented by X): The string is silenced and does not contribute to the chord.
  • Open (represented by 0): The string vibrates at its open pitch (E, A, D, G, B, or E).
  • Fret ‹number›: Frets can be selected within a range of 1 to 24.

To identify a chord in Guitar mode, at least two sounding strings must have frets or open positions selected. If this requirement is not met, the interface displays the instructional message: "Build a voicing to name it" alongside "Enter at least two different notes or choose frets on two sounding strings.".


Managing Harmonic Ambiguity and Accidentals

A single set of notes can often be interpreted as multiple different chords. For example, the pitch set E–G♯–B–C♯ can be identified as an E major sixth chord (E6) or a C sharp minor seventh chord with an E in the bass (C♯m7/E).

Because chord naming depends heavily on the surrounding musical context, the tool provides a comprehensive breakdown of possibilities. The output displays the Best match alongside Other possible names. To help musicians apply these results, the tool includes the following guidance: "Chord naming depends on musical context. Treat the first result as the clearest isolated reading, then compare the alternatives with the key and surrounding chords.".

To keep the notation clean and aligned with the key signature of your piece, the Accidentals toggle allows you to switch the display between Sharps and Flats. This changes how accidental notes are spelled across the Notes, Bass, and chord match outputs.
